The Cofan - Amazon camping and trekking trip 5 days
Suggested Itinerary
Day 1 Quito-Lago Agrio-Chiritza-Zabalo. Phew! Long day! Figure you've come 250 air kilometers, 50 land kilometers, and 120 river kilometers. No wonder you're tired. But the swimming is fine, and the large, traditional style thatched roofed sleeping house is cool and quiet. Your hosts have supper ready in a similar rustic house next door, and if there's time, you can wander over to visit the homes of your guides for the next days.
Day 2 In the morning, take advantage of the sunrise over the Aguarico. With a beautiful view up and down the river, its worth watching as the mists dissipate and the eternal waters roll by... for the archeologically minded, scan the sand banks for pottery shards. This is not the first time there's been a village here. The location with its sandy, fertile soil and the dark current of the Dancing Waters in the front yard have made this a favorite through the ages.
After breakfast, its time to shoulder the packs and head for the forest. Actual walking time on the trail is around four hours, but by the time you've finished learning about medicinal plants, spotting the myriad birds around, watched some army ants on their insect-control marches, and eaten lunch, it'll be afternoon before you arrive at your camp for the next couple of days. Once again there are two large, comfortable thatched roof huts for your comfort, this time far back in the deep and pristine forests of our Reserve Area.
Day 3 Into the deep forest! If you choose to go where no trail has ever been, you will most likely be in terrain never seen or experienced by human beings... one of the last places on earth where that can safely be said. Woolies, currasows, parrots, tapirs, and numerous other animals live here, and with a bit of luck, we should be able to have some excellent sightings.
Day 4 And today we get it into small canoes at our camp and begin a slow and leisurely paddle back to the Aguarico. The calm black waters, the monkeys and birds, the orchids and bromeliads; all the wonders of a quiet jungle stream. For the would-be anglers, there's always a hand line to catch some piranhas. For the birder, 50 species shouldn't be all that hard to come up with. And finally, back to the Aguarico and the homes of your hosts for a tranquil swim and a chance to buy some of the excellent jungle artisan work offered by people of our community.
Day 5 Back to civilization. A dawn departure should have us to the port of Chiritza and our waiting taxi by about 2 PM (speedboat for up to five passengers optional at slight extra charge) and on to Lago Agrio. For the exhausted, an overnight in a hotel and departure by plane the next morning. For the more adventuresome there are buses leaving at all hours of the day and night en route to Quito, Guayaquil, and other destinations. We trust that the memories of the trip will remain with you for a long time to come!
