Ecotourism in Kapawi
It has been said that an Achuar is a living encyclopedia. An Achuar can recognize everyone of the 500 species of birds found in Kapawi. The same person can distinguish every tree and explain their medical or practical uses. That is why in Kapawi you will be lead by an Achuar guide and a Naturalist guide as well. Both of them will make your experience unforgettable.
Kapawi is a place of multiple choices and is characterized by its flexibility we do not offer fixed programs, but you, with your guide and your group can design the most suitable one to meet your interests and physical condition.
Easy: Programs that include short hikes in the rain forest (up to 3 hours) on well defined trails, visits to the Achuar communities as well as trips in canoes. Overnight stays in the lodge or in tents.
Moderate: Programs that include medium-distance hikes (up 5 hours) sometimes crossing flooded areas. Overnight stays in the lodge, the Achuar communities, and tents.
Difficult: Demanding hikes of many hours or days in poorly defined and often flooded trails. Porters will carry food and supplies. Explorations journeys to virgin areas are occasionally offered. Trips dawn inaccessible rivers are done in inflatable rafts. Excellent physical conditional is required!
Most of the itineraries will include visits to the Achuar communities, hikes in the rain forest, canoeing in rivers and lakes as well as bird watching.

FRIDAY PASSENGER IN: QUITO - KAPAWI
Air transportation from Quito to Kapawi
QUITO-KAPAWI - Route 1 (direct flight)
Depart from Quito. Flight Quito- Kapawi, duration 1 hour and 30 minutes. During this route you are going to see the fantastic view of the Amazon Basin. Arrive at the landing strip at the Kapawi community, the guides and native people will waiting to receive passengers and help them to transport their luggage to the lodge. Continue with an approximately 10-minute hike, followed by a motorized canoe ride through the Capahuari River which takes passengers to the lodge. During the ride passengers can appreciate part of the wonderful nature and eco-system of the Amazon including some species of animals such as birds, dolphins and butterflies. At Kapawi, passengers receive a welcome from our guides.
Route 2 (Stopover at Shell)
Depart from Quito to Shell, for a flight lasting 40 minutes. Arrival is at the Pastaza landing strip in Shell, the entry point for the South Center of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Passengers will be transferred to another aircraft for a 60 minute flight to the landing strip at the Kapawi community where guides and native people will waiting to receive passengers and help them to transport their luggage to the lodge. Continue with an approximately 10-minute hike, followed by a motorized canoe ride through the Capahuari River which takes passengers to the lodge. MONDAY PASSENGERS OUT: ROUTE KAPAWI - QUITO
On Mondays we use a combination of air transportation from Kapawi to Shell, and land transportation through the Avenue of Volcanoes to Quito
Departing guests have an easy morning activity on their return day. They leave the lodge at meal time and take a 20-minute canoe trip to the Community, where they board a plane for the approximately 50-minute flight to Shell. If there is only one flight, the guests will start heading back to Quito around 15:00. If there are more groups coming out from Kapawi, the bus will leave Shell at 17:30 approximately. Depending the time they leave Shell, we will offer them either dinner at Rumipamba de las Rosas or Hacienda la Cienega. They will arrive to Quito around 23:00 PM.
Activity Level: Easy to Difficult.
Recommendations: Sunscreen and bug spray are essential.
Notes: Transportation to Kapawi per passenger. Single Rate is available for passengers without sharing option. Due to varied weather conditions, it is recommended that you entertain the idea of adding an extra day to your itinerary after visiting Kapawi to make sure you meet your connecting flights to your next destination. Children under 7 years of age pay half price when accompanied by an adult in the same cabin. Children under 3 years of age pay half price for the transportation rate Quito-Kapawi-Quito. These rates are subject to change without prior notice. Other transportation routes can be arranged upon request and per Operation Department written approval.
Passengers will be advised of the final route andtimes of departures the evening before their excursion to Kapawi.
