Suggested Itinerary
Day 1
We leave Puyo at 9:00 a.m. by pick-up. After a 1-hour drive we arrive at a reserve. Here we leave our backpacks in one of the cabins and then we make a 2-hour walk in the rainforest. During the hike the guide tells us about different plants and trees, and we may see colorful butterflies and birds. After a swim under a waterfall we return following a different trail. After lunch we visit an indigenous family to see how they make the ceramic that are used for the traditional chicha-drink. Also we will learn how to use the cervatana (blowgun). We spend the night in a traditional hut.
Day 2
After breakfast we start a 5-hour walk in the jungle. This hike leads us through both primary and secondary rainforest. The guide explains about the type of soil in the forest, and about its flora and fauna. After lunch we embark a dugout canoe and go down the rapids of the Puyo river. We arrive at the house of a family of Quichua's, where we will spend the second night. After dinner we make a walk to a lagoon, where we have chance to see the endangered black cayman. Also we may see phosphorescent plants and nocturnal insects.
Day 3
After breakfast we cross the river by canoe and visit a small school in a community. Then we make a 1-hour hike uphill, to a high viewpoint, from where we have a spectacular view of the jungle. We can overlook the rainforest with its rivers, and with clear weather it is possible to see the volcanoes Sangay and Tungurahua. By pick-up we drive back to Puyo. Arrival at about 4:00 p.m.
